This is a blog documenting my painting exercises. These are very quick sketches 15-60 min for educational purposes only. Constructive criticism very welcome
Hey Abe, these are a great start you're really capturing the atmosphere and colours well. Crit: Play around with the brushes in PS, a soft brush would work well in blending the sky tone with the odd sharp brush so it retains some sharpness. A balance with between hard and sharp brushes would be something good for you to play with.
Thanks for all this great feedback Damien. It is very encouraging. I want to start playing with brushes a little more while trying to keep it as simple as possible. Do you have any PS brushes that you like using that I could give a go?
I must say you are making things hard for yourself with the no undo and using hard brushes, I dont think Id fancy that! Having said that you are doing a great job.
The one main thikng with this piece is that rock on the right could do with more texture, it looks a touch flat in terms of tone and colour. From a compositional point of view I think it would sit better on a 'third' as it is its nearly in the middle.
Add a 'desaturate' adjustment layer to the top of the work and turn it on now and again to check your values in Greyscale.
If you are going to keep using a hard brush put the brush opacity to about 75% that will soften and make it easier to blend.
Great advise from Jason, you are making things hard for yourself buy painting on one layer. If you don't want to use too many layers I'd suggest breaking up into layers the compostion into background mid ground and foreground. Also add another layer for something that your unsure will work that way you don't waste time fixing it and if it does work flatten in. To many layers are a pain too handle in the early stages of a piece.
